The NedCar facility itself, built in the city of Sittard-Geleen, was opened in June 1968 to built vehicles for Dutch manufacturer Van Doorne’s Automobiel Fabriek (DAF).  The plant has a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles and has also built Volvo’s, SmartCars’ ForFour and since 1995, Mitsubishi cars.  DAF.  Financial difficulties threatened closure in the 1990s but the Dutch government took steps to ensure its survival, resulting in a joint venture between the Dutch State, Volvo and Mitsubishi Motors beginning in August 1991.  NedCar became part a full Mitsubishi subsidiary in March 2001 after Volvo sold its 50% stake in the company to Mitsubishi.
