Muscle Car Classics: Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 logoToday we look at a classic American muscle car that began life in the late 60′s and has been updated over the years. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is both an old and a new model car with the original GT500 model being built alongside the GT350 Mustang during the late 1960s and features a 428 cubic-inch Police Interceptor engine. Several different versions were created, including the 1968 GT500 KR, aka the King of the Road. It featured a Cobra Jet V8 engine and could generate 335 horsepower.

During 1969 and 1970, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 went through a number of upgrades. The body length was increased by 100 mm, and several style and design changes were made. In 1970, the final GT500 rolled off the assembly line, and it would be more than 30 years before another would be made. The Shelby GT500s sold in 1970 were actually not new cars – they were leftover 1969 models that had not sold.

In 2003, Ford and Shelby unveiled the new Shelby GT500 at the New York International Auto Show. This new and updated version of the Shelby GT500 was created by a collaborative effort between Carroll Shelby and Ford’s Special Vehicle Team. Despite its announcement in 2003, the car was not actually delivered until May of 2006. It features a 5.4 litre Modular 500 horsepower supercharged V8 engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and more. Shelby and Ford agreed to only make this version of the GT500 for three years (2006 – 2009). Around 10,000 cars were made each year at Ford’s facility in Michigan.

Ford and Shelby plan to release a new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in 2010, preview photos are below. It has been redesigned to make the car look much sleeker and more modern. It will also feature a 540 horsepower engine and be more fuel efficient. A new version of the Ford Shelby GT500KR has also been released in recent years. It features many of the same designs and styles as the original 1968 King of the Road Shelby.
