A look at the amazing Bugatti Veyron

Bugatti logoThe Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 was built by Bugatti Automobiles SAS, a subsidiary of Volkswagen.  It’s a mid-engine car that first hit the market in 2005 after being announced five years earlier.  It became known as the fastest production car in the world, and it currently holds the fastest acceleration record, going from zero to 100 km/h within two and a half seconds.  The Bugatti Veyron is also the most expensive production car currently available in the world, costing over 1.1 million euros.

The Bugatti Veyron features a W16 engine that can reach speeds of over 400 km/h.  The car is named after the French race driver Pierre Veyron, the winner of the 1939 Le Mans race as a part of the original Bugatti company.  Once production began, at least 133 examples of the car were built.  All in all, there were only 300 Bugatti Veyrons built, including some variant editions.  These include the Veyron 16.4, Pur Sang, Sang Noir, Targe, Hermes Ediction, Vincero, and the Bleu Cenetaire.  The Veyron will be replaced by the Bugatti Grand Sport, a convertible that is more or less the same as the Veyron.

Production of the Veyron began in 1999.  While the prototype was a bit different from the final production car, there were some changes, including the W18 engine found in the concept car.  The car was designed by Hartmut Warkuss, while the exterior was done by Jozef Kaban, a member of Volkswagen.  The car was promoted in 2000 as an advance concept vehicle that Volkswagen marketed as the most powerful, fastest, and most expensive car ever conceived and built.  Changes in leadership kept the Bugatti Veyron in development for several years, and major modifications were made over the next several years.  Finally, the car was released in 2005.  Many compare the Veyron to the Concorde jet in terms of technological innovations.
