New Ford Ka concept unveiled

New Ford Ka concept unveiledFord has unveiled a new concept for the Ford Ka, initially to be sold in South America and South Asia with a prediction that it’ll go on sale in the UK in 2014 – although this hasn’t been officially confirmed.  Demand for smaller cars is growing in the emerging markets with growth in the global demand for sub-B segment cars predicted to be 44% by 2017.

President of The Americas for Ford Motor Company Joe Hinrichs said “The Ford Ka Concept is aimed at customers in growth markets who want and expect more.”  Hinrichs went on to say “it will delight consumers with its sleek design, clever technology, attention-to-detail quality and superb craftsmanship. It’s truly another global design and engineering milestone for Ford.”

The Ka Concept is the second to be developed by Ford Brazil – the first car being the Ford EcoSport compact SUV was the first and it is due to go on sale in the UK in early 2014.   As well as being designed in the country, the Ka Concept will also be built in Brazil alongside the EcoSport SUV.

The new Ford Ka concept has a five door chassis, using very different styling when compared to the current model.  The original European Ford Ka was based on the Fiat 500 and was sold between 1996 and 2008.

New Ford Ka Concept five door designThe five door design will use the underlying platform from the Ford Figo which itself was a car built on the previous generation Fiesta structure.  The body design uses Ford’s familiar wide grille, similar to Ford’s larger body models including the Focus and Mondeo. It also includes rear sloping headlights and swooping lines along the body also give a more striking appearance.

Ford claims that the Ka Concept will incorporate a high level of equipment in the base level model including iPhone / iPod integration and air conditioning.  Ford also claims that there will be sufficient space for five occupants despite the car’s comparatively small dimensions; however there are no photos of the interior available.  No engine specifications have been announced for the Concept Ka but Ford promises class leading fuel economy.
