Porsche 911 Turbo

Porsche LogoThe Porsche 911 turbo, also known as the Porsche 930, was a turbocharged version of the Porsche 911.  It was first produced in 1974.  In Europe, it was known as the 911 Turbo, but in North America, it went by the name Porsche 930.  The car features a very distinctive body shape because of the fact that its wheel-arches had to be made quite wide to fit the larger, wider tires.  The rear spoiler is also quite large.  While it may not seem that fast today, the car’s 3.0 liter engine was quite fast for the time, and many found it exhilarating.

Because of its production figures, the basic version of the Porsche 911 Turbo actually qualified for FIA Group 4 competition.  This lead to a racing version, the Porsche 934, being introduced in 1976.  The car was used in several races, including Le Mans, and is known for its feud with the BMW 3.0 CSL.  The Porsche 935, which was based on this model, later competed in FIA Group 5 races.  Private teams driving these models of the Porsche 911 Turbo would go on to win a number of key races, including Le Mans in 1979.  Porsche 911 Turbos were driven in competition into the 1980s until rule changes forced them out.

In 1989, the last year it was produced, Porsche changed up the 911 Turbo a bit by adding a five-speed gearbox.  However, the next year would see this model of Porsche replaced with the 964, a vehicle that used the same engine but sported other features.  Several variants were introduced, including the Cabriolet convertible.  Because of these variants, the 911 Turbo line was kept active longer than Porsche had originally planned.  All in all, over 58,000 911 Turbos were made and sold.  The car remains a popular model today, and many collectors have a 911 Turbo in their garages.
